Australia’s first app helps maximise tax returns for property investors

New app Abakus cuts receipt clutter and eases the burden of property tax management

Sydney, Australia, 18 July 2016 – Abakus Apps, a new finance-based smartphone application and the first of its kind in Australia, launched today. Aimed at everyday Australian residential property investors, Abakus makes property tax management more convenient and efficient – helping users self-manage their investment/s, maximise their tax return and obtain an estimate of their tax position at any time during the financial year.

Investing in property offers tax benefits that make real estate an attractive financial venture. Abakus offers a unique set of features for users to keep on top of tax requirements and paperwork associated with property ownership. Property and financial details entered in Abakus enables the app to provide a wealth of valuable information including pre and post-tax position and deductions, rental yield, total running expenses, and cost base tracking of the property. Receipts and documents such as an Offer of Acceptance or a Settlement Statement can also be easily uploaded safely to the cloud. Furthermore, users can enter personal expenses and keep individual income tax-related deductions all in one place.

Created by Brenton Tidow, farmer’s son from rural Western Australia turned pipeline surveyor, already has a number of properties under his belt. Abakus came about through the frustration of handling the many pesky expense receipts relating to his investments. Now a budding entrepreneur, Tidow identified a gap in the market for an uncomplicated approach to managing property tax affairs. By selling one of his own properties to finance Abakus, Tidow streamlined a massive, methodical Excel spreadsheet with intricate algorithms into the app.

 U.S. startup arrives in Queensland to take up Hot DesQ 

QUT Creative Enterprise Australia selected by U.S. virtual reality startup, TimeLooper, as debut APAC base

Australia, 19 July 2016: The first international startup to benefit from the Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland Hot DesQ initiative has arrived in the state, selecting QUT Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA) as its host.

Tourism-focused virtual reality (VR) platform, TimeLooper, recently won a $50,000 grant from Hot DesQ to extend its operations to Queensland, following its participation at New York’s TechCrunch Disrupt event in May.

TimeLooper selected CEA from the 13 Queensland Government approved Hosts via the Advance Queensland Hot DesQ program, due to its network strength in the creative tech communities, its link to Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the facilities available through its extensive networks. To date, CEA has supported over 500 creative industry businesses on site, including raising over $60 million in capital.

CEA will host TimeLooper for a six month period, helping the team to connect to the local startup networks, provide access to mentors and its onsite coworking space, The Coterie, business advice, access to its incubator masterclass program, exposure at Creative3 and other levels of support required to accelerate the growth of the platform.

CEO of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, Anna Rooke, said: “We are thrilled that TimeLooper has selected CEA as its inaugural Australian host. We are passionate about supporting startups in the creative tech space and are excited to help accelerate its development and growth in the APAC market.

“Creative tech is contributing hugely to economies overseas, so we’re looking forward to leveraging the skills and network that TimeLooper will, in return, bring to Queensland, and indeed Australia, through its work in our market,” added Ms Rooke.

The TimeLooper platform enables users to experience and re-live unforgettable moments in history through their smartphones in 3D reality – such as the 1940 London Blitz. The app is proving to be an ideal travel companion for tourists visiting monumental landmarks around the world, transporting them back through time, from the Great Fire of London to the V-J Day ‘kiss’ in Times Square.

Commenting on the relocation to Queensland, COO of TimeLooper, Andrew Feinberg, said: “When considering expansion beyond London and New York, we sought a market with a robust tourism ecosystem, rich pool of talent, and proximity to the booming APAC region.

“TimeLooper’s tourism focus makes them an ideal first recipient of a Hot DesQ grant,” Ms Enoch said. “Hot DesQ is designed to attract established startups from across the country and around the globe to Queensland to develop their ideas at one of 13 locations right around the state.

“The company’s arrival in Queensland will provide wonderful collaborative opportunities for the state’s tourism sector and this innovative company will inject exciting new talent into Queensland’s dynamic startup culture.”

The Hot DesQ initiative is part of the $405 million whole-of-government Advance Queensland agenda providing a suite of programs to support the growth of startups and business, and increase innovation activity and venture capital investment.

This Australian-first Hot DesQ program is modelled on successful international programs such as Startup Chile, which has been running since 2010, and the French Tech Ticket launched just last year.

CEO of StartupAUS Alex McCauley said StartupAUS had confidence both Minister Hunt and Minister Laundy would deliver strong results in an area that had been reconfirmed as a key priority for the Turnbull Government.

This is a great front-bench job – you meet fantastic people and you don’t have to wear a tie to work every day.

Since its formation, StartupAUS has actively engaged with all levels of government to help shape some of the country’s most important economic policy discussions.

“One of our key objectives is providing greater support for the creation and growth of tech startups, specifically those that have the potential to be globally commercial companies. If we are to become a knowledge intensive economy, we need to up our game by assisting ‘generation startup’ in incentivising their ideas. Australia, 14 July 2016: Australia’s largest conference for creative entrepreneurs – Creative3 – has today announced its first round of speakers and panellists, featuring a number of world-renowned creative entrepreneurs and thought-leaders, from creator and producer of That Startup Show, Anna Reeves, to film and games veteran Ben Britten – an Academy Award winner for technical achievement in films including Spiderman, Superman Returns and Terminator 3.

An initiative by QUT Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA), Creative3 is Australia’s leading creative-tech event designed to spark collaboration and connect those within the industry. A series of dynamic presentations and interactive panels hosted by world-class creative game-changers will offer unique insights into creativity, investment and enterprise.

Creative3 will also host an exclusive breakfast event – Creative3 Pitch – where four shortlisted creative-tech startups from across Australia will pitch to angel investors. CEA will provide pre-event coaching and workshops to ensure each startup is pitch-ready. The winner will go on to represent Australia and compete against 63 countries at the Creative Business Cup in Denmark later this year.

MCN APPOINTS MARK BRANDON AS CHIEF DATA OFFICER

Monday, 20 June 2016, SYDNEY:  International media executive and entrepreneur, Mark Brandon, will join the Multi Channel Network (MCN) senior management team as Chief Data Officer, reporting to CEO Anthony Fitzgerald, MCN announced today.

Mr Brandon will lead MCN’s Multiview research, Insights & Analytics team, plus drive the company’s data development strategy. He will work closely with MCN’s stakeholders Foxtel, Network Ten, Fox Sports, Telstra Media, clients and ad tech supply chain partners to evolve MCN’s data proposition and roadmap. Mr Brandon will also manage MCN’s key research relationships with OzTAM and Quantium.

A highly experienced data expert, Mr Brandon began his career in agencies before moving to UK broadcasters ITV and Channel 4, where he led early stage activities in interactivity and digital.

He then co-owned and ran his own interactive services business before being tempted back to corporate life by UK multi-platform giant Virgin Media, where he led advanced advertising and data initiatives. Most recently, he has been successfully running his own consultancy business MB Media Advisory, working with big and small companies in the UK, USA and Australia.

Mr Brandon has extensive general management experience, as well as significant technology competence. He has also had direct experience with company mergers and acquisitions, and of raising finance from VCs, private equity businesses and angel investors.

Mr Fitzgerald said Mark is one of the most respected media executives globally.

“Mark has unparalleled global expertise in advanced advertising and data initiatives. We have been fortunate to have benefitted from Mark’s wisdom and insights in an advisory capacity for some years now, so we are delighted to have persuaded Mark to export his talents and expertise into our market and our business on a more permanent basis,” he said.

StartupAUS supports AVCAL Policy Blueprint 

Australia, 20 June 2016: StartupAUS CEO Alex McCauley today supported the policy blueprint released by the Australian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL) calling it a “sensible, helpful addition to the innovation policy debate.”

The AVCAL Policy Blueprint calls for a range of policy reforms to help drive the next wave of economic growth amongst home-grown ‘scale-ups’ – companies that are in their second stage of growth and require additional capital to scale their business globally.

McCauley said supporting scale-ups is critical if we want to make sure our fastest-growing and most promising companies stay in Australia. 

“This is a period of unprecedented opportunity for Australian startups, and we must be careful not squander it.  A record $1billion has been raised or is being raised in private equity and venture capital funds since this time last year. That investment is an enormous boost to our early stage startups and a great indication of the powerhouse of high growth startup brands emerging around the country,” he said.

“However StartupAUS shares AVCALs concern that unless we take a long-term approach to supporting these startups, we may lose many of them to offshore competition or local funding challenges.

“StartupAUS works closely with AVCAL as a significant contributor to the growth of our startup ecosystem in Australia.  We have been active champions of a number of the recommendations in the AVCAL blueprint including the removal of existing barriers to employees receiving share options.  This is an urgently needed reform which will allow fast-growing companies to keep hiring employees in Australia,” McCauley said.

“We are also pleased to see quarterly payments of R&D Tax Incentives included in the AVCAL recommendations.  This is an area StartupAUS has been advocating for some time – and, in fact, we would like to see startups at the earliest stage have their tax incentives doubled,” he said. 

“We want to see an increase to research and development in this country because it’s the best way governments can support innovative young companies in Australia.  It also provides taxpayers great bang for their buck in terms of economic outcomes. This isn’t about fixing something that’s broken. This is about taking a government initiative that is working fantastically for startups, and making it even better,” McCauley said.

The StartupAUS Board of Directors, made up of entrepreneurs, investors, and technology leaders from around Australia, also recommend making employee visas more accessible for Australian startups and boosting funding to incubators and accelerators.

Offering consumers more fairness and certainty when booking a cab… and getting taxi drivers back in the game

Australia, 16 May 2016: Native taxi payments innovator, ingogo, has today announced a bold Australian first: it’s doing away with traditional metered fares and has shifted its much lauded bookings and payment platform to offer fixed fare bookings. From today, customers will no longer need to worry about how much a fare will cost when they get in the cab.

One of the most common complaints travellers have using taxis is the uncertainty in price before getting into the vehicle. ingogo’s ingenious approach offering fixed fares – the only taxi booking service and app in Australia to do this – instantly eliminates the need to keep a close watch on the meter. A precise determination of what the fare will be is provided at the point a customer enters the trip details into the application. Only once the customer accepts the fare, will the taxi be booked and a driver sent to pick them up.

Hamish Petrie, ingogo CEO, said: “Our redesigned application is the next stage in providing customers with the superior experience that they have come to expect. ingogo already offers the most robust suite of services through our app. This is another feather in that cap.

The algorithm that determines the fare price takes into account the distance and expected time using the most efficient route to the destination, traffic conditions, as well as any tolls or fees that might accrue through the trip. There is no surge pricing and no hidden surprises – the price is comparable to what would show up on the same trip if it was a standard metered fare. This makes it a win-win for consumers; what they see is what they get.

Jeff Lim, ingogo Chief Marketing Officer, said: “Customers are at times uncomfortable with taxis, some hire cars and rideshares for a number of reasons. They’re not sure of the final price before they get in, or are concerned that a driver will take a less-than-optimal route to get the passenger to their destination.”

“Through the new ingogo app, customers will have the certainty that they crave around pricing. Legislation expected in NSW will require an estimate when booking, but ingogo is now taking that to the next level. Plus passengers can jump straight out of the cab as payment and receipts are automated ”.

Founded in December 2015 by influential serial entrepreneurs Peter Bradd and Jack Delosa, The Beanstalk Factory will work with the employees in each organisation to provide training and coaching to help stimulate entrepreneurial thinking and innovative outcomes.

Mr Bradd, also a Founder of Scribblepics, Founding Director of Fishburners and Chairman of StartupAUS, said the rapid growth of The Beanstalk Factory highlights the huge appetite for innovation amongst some of the biggest companies in Australia.

“The shape of business is changing radically as a result of global disruption, and we are now seeing the traditional business model flipped on its head,” said Mr Bradd. “Big business is striving to behave more like agile, lean and innovative startups, and startups are increasingly open to partner and connect to traditional business in order to grow and scale. Creating a more systematic framework for innovation within large organisations is fundamental to business survival and growth.”

Blue Knot Foundation President joins forces with National Families Week

Blue Knot Foundation President, Dr Cathy Kezelman AM, announced as ambassador of National Families Week 2016

 

Australia, 16 May 2016 – President of the leading national organisation working with the one in four Australian adult survivors of childhood trauma including abuse, Blue Knot Foundation (formerly Adults Surviving Child Abuse (ASCA)), Dr Cathy Kezelman AM, has become an Ambassador for National Families Week 2016.

 

Australia’s annual celebration of the importance of families, National Families Week 2016, will be held from Sunday 15 May to Saturday 21 May 2016 (coinciding with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May). The 2016 theme is ‘Stronger Families, Stronger Communities‘.

 

President of Blue Knot Foundation, Dr Cathy Kezelman AM, said Blue Knot Foundation build families of support so survivors become active participating members of their communities.

 

“I’m honoured to be an ambassador of National Families Week. The cause highlights the important role strong families play in society. It’s crucial that we, as a society, work to build healthy families and strengthen community support for all of those affected by childhood trauma and abuse, along with addressing the factors which perpetuate abuse and neglect within families.”

 

“For many survivors, families play a crucial role in the recovery process; for others where family relationships are broken or strained, and abuse has occurred, the support of friends, neighbours, work colleagues and community members is vital. Non-blood relatives can become ‘family’ when times are tough, breaking isolation and fostering those positive connections, which build health and wellbeing. Networks, such as Blue Knot Foundation, can help people to navigate through tough times and help them on their recovery journey,” she said.

 

National Families Week is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services as a valuable opportunity to demonstrate that families, across the lifespan, are integral to our civil society. In 2016, over a 100,000 people are participating in registered events around Australia, illustrating the importance of families within the community.

Families Australia Chief Executive Officer, Dr Brian Babington, said: “Families are the most important building block of our society. Stronger families also mean stronger, more resilient communities.”
