ACS responds to Govt’s National Security Strategy

Skills and professional development key to Cyber Security challenge

ACS responds to the Government’s National Security Strategy

January 23rd 2013The Australian Computer Society welcomes the focus on Cyber security in the Government’s first National Security Strategy. As the Government have noted, the number of cyber incidents have increased by 42 per cent over the past two years, and it is key that we as a nation work together to protect the country from cyber attacks.

Besides the risk to critical infrastructure including banking and finance, emergency services, energy and utilities, food, health care, IT and communications, mass gatherings transportation and water, there is also a significant economic risk arising from cyber crime and terrorism. In our past submissions to the government the ACS have made the case that the best form of defence is for the Government to regulate and control practitioners who lead and manage our nations’ ICT based critical infrastructure.

Alongside the recommendations of the National Security Strategy, the ACS would hope to see:

·     Registration of ICT practitioners to allow trusted authorities to share timely updates and information about threats. These are standards that industry and the public takes for granted as being integral to the practice of many other high trust occupations such as law, medicine and accountancy.

·     Given the changing nature of security threats, it is critically important for Australia to invest in R&D in security technologies which are relevant to protecting computing systems and information infrastructures in the digital economy. These include secure and trusted distributed information and network systems, mobile software systems and networks and secure applications and web based online services.

·     Governments must establish a basis for registration and control of ICT security professionals who work with business and national critical ICT based infrastructure. The standards that industry and the public takes for granted as being integral to the practice of many other high trust occupations such as law, medicine, teaching, accounting, electricians, plumbers and the like must also apply to ICT professionals.

·     All firms should be encouraged and supported to develop up to date their knowledge and an appropriate cyber security plan that they can respond to and effectively contain a cyber attack to minimise damage and financial loss.

ACS CEO Alan Patterson comments: “Elevating the recognition of ICT professional standards and skills within both industry and public spheres is a critical step in the future-proofing of our national cyber security. Without suitably qualified and certifiable practitioners, our ability to counter cyber attacks at any level will be greatly hampered.

“The ACS will continue our work with the government, industry and ICT practitioners to further the understanding of cyber security in Australia.”

Make Something for the Aurora Short Film Festival 2013

Call For Entries: Nov 30 2012 – April 26 2013

Sydney, January 2013:  Aurora, Australia’s leading not-for-profit subscription community channel, is calling all creatives to enter this year’s short film festival – Make Something 2013. Anyone interested in film and television is invited to submit their own digital content for a chance to receive industry acknowledgement, national exposure and sponsorship opportunities to help kick-start their film and TV careers.

Aurora CEO Phyllisse Stanton said, “With the huge success of the first Aurora Short Film Festival, we are very pleased to announce its return for 2013.

“As an independent broadcaster, we are passionate about uncovering fresh Australian talent. The short-film festival is all about showcasing tomorrow’s film and TV sensations to a national audience.”

The festival puts no stamp on the creative limits of entrants and is bound by no signature theme, topic or skill level, whether it is a short film, music clip, doco, or digital art.

Madeleine Parker, winner in 2012, commented: “Winning the Critics’ Choice Award at The Aurora Short Film Festival was a big moment for me. It gave me something to celebrate, the encouragement to continue and my film was screened at the Dendy – which has always been a dream.”

Stanton notes, “Due to the diversity of entrants we had last year, we have added new categories for 2013. As well as the winner of the Open Category, there will also be awards for the Top Young Film Maker and the Top Community Organisation film.”

The shortlisted films will be screened online prior to the festival, allowing both the new and experienced filmmakers the chance to interact with the audience – as well as use the digital platform for showcasing materials.

“The audience will drive the contest online, alongside the judges who will be representing all facets of the industry.  The real test for the material will come from the online public votes – where these opinions are the key to winning the cash prizes.

“Short films are often the practice ground for feature films and can stand as a unique art form that can deliver a powerful message in a very short space of time,” she said.

Aurora will announce the top 10 finalists, along with the top five Young Film Maker entries and the top five Community Organisation films on 3rd May 2013.

The winner will be announced at the Finals Night, Tuesday 4th June 2013, at the Dendy Opera Quays.

Subject: Media release: 10 tech enterprises chosen for ANZ Innovyz START accelerator

Hi team,

Please see below the release I’ve been putting out this morning for ANZ Innovyz START..

Media Release

For Release: 17 January 2013

ANZ Innovyz START announces entrants for 2013 program

– Ten innovative companies selected for accelerated growth –

ANZ, in partnership with Innovyz, today announced 10 companies selected to take part in the second ‘ANZ Innovyz START Program’, a three month intensive accelerator program aimed at assisting prospective and existing small business owners to develop and grow their businesses for success.

Now in its second year, the program helps develop successful tech enterprises with potentially break-through ideas that are ready for accelerated growth. The program is modeled on the renowned US-based TechStars program, which has created some of the world’s most successful start-up businesses.

The program commences on 21 January 2013, when representatives from each of the 10 companies will relocate to South Australia for 13 weeks to work with world-class mentors – including CEOs and corporate executives who have started, grown and exited companies – to refine their business model, shape their marketing and product strategies, and prepare for global growth. High-profile program mentors include Chief Experience Evangelist for Microsoft’s US Developer & Platform Evangelism (DPE) team, Chris Bernard, noted Silicon Valley entrepreneur Martin Babinec, and co-founder and former Chairman of DealsDirect, Paul Greenberg.

The 10 entrants, nine of which are from Australia, were selected from over 120 applicants.

Dr. Jana Matthews, Managing Director of ANZ Innovyz START said: “We were looking for break-through ideas that could be enabled by web 2.0, software and mobile. We have been very pleased with the breadth and depth of business ideas we’ve seen in the applications for the 2013 ANZ Innovyz START program. The vision, passion and ambition of our entrants is testament to Australia’s burgeoning start-up and small business eco-system.”

Nick Reade, ANZ General Manager for Small Business, said: “ANZ’s ongoing support for this program forms part of our commitment to the Australian Small Business sector and in particular start-up businesses. When you’re a start-up business, success requires more than a great innovative idea, it’s about having the right support, mentoring and access to knowledgeable investors to get off the ground”.

“This program is about fostering growth and innovation in start-up businesses and working with start-up companies to rapidly accelerate their growth. We’re a strong supporter of the start up segment, approving around 7 out of 10 start up loan applications.”

Aurora launches a ripper week for Oz Day

20th– 26th January 2013

Sydney –21 January 2013: To celebrate the nation, Aurora, the leading not-for-profit STV community channel, is extending this Australia Day into a week’s worth of outdoor Aussie shows.

CEO of Aurora Phyllisse Stanton says: “We wanted our viewers to be able to settle in for a big celebration of all that is great about this country, so we thought what better way to do that than extend it to a week-long extravaganza!”

The week’s program line up starts on Sunday 20 January and includes a fishing, outdoor and adventure marathon with the likes of Hooked, Fishin’ Trip and River To Reef, as well as All 4 Adventure, Your 4×4 and 4WD Touring Australia. Aurora is also bringing back Rodder’s Life. The show promises rev-heads an arvo full of hot rods and classic cars.

The weeklong Australian fete finishes with the Jukebox Saturday Night: Oz Rock Special, hosted by Ken Sparkes on 26 January. Viewers can tune in and experience video clips of national favourites from a range of local musos such as Johnny O’Keefe, The Easybeats, Sherbet, Men At Work, The Angels and Icehouse.

“Aurora loves having the opportunity to be able to bring the nation together, which is exactly what Australia Day is all about. We think the celebration of Australia is too big for just one day, so we’ve taken the idea and turned it into a full week.
