Evergen partners with Wattwatchers to unlock further energy savings for Australian homes and businesses

Integration of Wattwatchers tech into the Evergen platform gives visibility and control over major loads, reducing cost, maximising independence, and increasing revenue opportunities for consumers

Sydney, Australia, 14 August 2019 – Evergen, Australia’s fastest growing solar and battery systems provider, has partnered with digital energy technology company Wattwatchers, bringing their market-leading, cloud-based technologies together to help lower electricity bills for Australian homes and businesses.

The partnership offers Evergen customers the full suite of solar and battery installation plus software to monitor and optimise appliances behind-the-meter, enabling them to make better choices about how they consume electricity. It will enhance the availability of real-time data and allow both brands to access and capitalise on emerging market opportunities – targeting residential and commercial consumers throughout the country.

Evergen is the first company in Australia that has developed world-leading software to monitor its customers’ energy usage and optimise it programmatically, in particular when to import power from the grid to top up your battery and when to store power in your battery from the sun. Wattwatchers focuses on behind-the-meter controls to actively switch on and off high-power use items such as hot water systems and will allow Evergen’s intelligent algorithm to determine whether the hot water needs to be charged via solar or the grid, depending on time of day and household usage.

Evergen CEO Ben Hutt said centralised coal-powered grids are not only bad for the environment but also bad for the economy and no longer makes any sense.

“Our customers are already saving on average 76 per cent on their energy costs. By incorporating Wattwatchers into our solution stack and integrating Wattwatchers cloud infrastructure, we anticipate our customers will see an increase in average savings on their energy costs closer to 90 per cent,” said Mr Hutt.

Australia has a world-record high penetration of PV systems – now on more than two million rooftops or over 20 per cent of homes across Australia, compared with around only one per cent in the United States – and has become a global testbed for these distributed energy resources (DER). There’s a global technology race to turn at-the-meter energy assets like rooftop solar PV and battery storage systems into cloud-connected virtual power plants (VPP) that will enable the electricity grids of the near future.

Mr Hutt continued, “Partnering with Wattwatchers adds an extra dimension to Evergen’s standard offerings and this will open the door to additional functionality including DER and demand response fleet orchestration such as virtual power and demand plants. As the network infrastructure moves to be smarter, having these controls in homes allows customers to earn revenue from the grid for controlling their loads, for example, turning off the air-conditioning if it helps to avoid a blackout.”

CEO of Wattwatchers Mr Gavin Dietz said that real-time energy data through the cloud was beginning to re-define how consumers could engage with the electricity system.

“The Wattwatchers team sees this opportunity to work with Evergen as a powerful reinforcement of our belief in data-driven solutions being a vital component of the clean energy transition. Data is the way grid operators and service aggregators can connect millions of rooftop solar installations, battery storage systems and controllable loads, and make DER and demand response work for electricity grids as well as consumers,” said Mr Dietz.

Evergen is Australia’s first, next-generation, intelligent home energy management system, that arose from a collaboration between CSIRO and AMP Capital with a vision to lower the cost of energy to all Australians, using clean, renewable power and intelligent technology developed and tested over several years by CSIRO.

Evergen deploys integrated energy systems, combining solar power and battery technology in commercial and residential contexts, to reduce the cost of electricity bills for Australians. Its technology delivers significant savings to customers on average 76 per cent of energy costs and it supports distributed energy networks through VPPs and other commercial structures.

Wattwatchers is a digital energy technology company enabling fast, powerful, scalable solutions to monitor, analyse and control electrical circuits in real-time through the cloud. With 30,000 devices already deployed, Wattwatchers’ highly flexible solutions are now ‘inside’ numerous applications across residential, commercial and industrial, and utility use cases.

Evergen works with top-tier institutional investors, as well as direct to consumers, which includes clients such as leading diversified Australian property group Mirvac and others. Together with Evergen, Wattwatchers has also recently been installed into Mirvac’s showcase residential demonstration site in Melbourne, the House with No Bills, and is feeding data to Evergen to assist in optimising the home’s rooftop solar PV and battery storage system.
